| Dear Parents:
I am thrilled to communicate with you in our very first student generated newsletter and what better medium to also inform you of Uni’s outstanding achievement. In a recent report published by the Riverside County Office of Education (RCOE School Report Card), Uni is identified as one of the top five middle schools in the entire county to show the most academic growth from 2002-2009. We are extremely proud of this accomplishment and proud to have our hard work recognized by the County Office of Education.
The school year continues to progress as we all work to meet the district’s goal for student achievement. Our goal this year is to have 15% more student’s proficient district-wide than last year. Additionally, we are striving to increase the number of proficient English learners by 20% above last year. As the state’s requirements for student achievement increase dramatically each year, our goals must change accordingly which means your support becomes increasingly critical. Specifically, I ask your support in the following ways:
• Ask to see your student’s progress report every second and fourth Thursday. If your child does not bring a progress report home on these days, please contact the counselor immediately. • Remember, you may go online to check your child’s grade in any class by logging onto www.uniwolves.com. You will then click onto “weblockers” and follow the directions to access your child’s information. • If any teacher has written a comment on your child’s progress report indicating he or she has missing assignments, low test scores or any statement indicating unsatisfactory progress, call and request a team conference immediately. • Make sure your student attends all after school intervention or academic support classes that have been assigned by the school. This is very important since some students have already been assigned to attend an after school class because their work does not meet standards. If this is the case with your child, he or she must attend in order to get needed support. • Check your student’s planner weekly for homework assignments. Homework is assigned daily even if it is reading. • Remember that your child’s daily attendance is critical. However, if your child has to remain at home due to illness or another excusable reason, please make sure to contact the office and request homework or contact the teacher directly by phone or email. • Make sure your student is prepared each day with the required materials. Please see the last page where a list of required materials is listed.
Remember, your child’s achievement is dependent upon our collective, continuous involvement.
Patricia Hayes Principal

History of University Heights
University Heights originally opened as a junior high in 1927. The original school was located on University Avenue in the current Cesar Chavez Community Center. The school moved to its current site in 1972 and is presently a middle school serving approximately 870 seventh and eight graders. The student population is drawn from the areas of Highgrove, UCR, Eastside, and Canyon Crest. The school staff has a traditional strong commitment to academic achievement and high expectations. Student response to these expectations is very positive and together we strive for excellence. Thus our motto – “A Renaissance School”.
Partnership: Uni is proud of our Partnership Program with the University of California Riverside and the educational assistance available to our students because of this close relationship between the schools. Our students are often able to take advantage of extra support provided during designated classes by Americorps and/or Title I tutors.
